Everyone experiences anxiety once in a while. Stressful life events like a financial crisis, job loss, health concerns, or death in the family may trigger anxiety in people. However, some people are generally more prone to anxiety than others. These individuals will be frequently distracted by their worries, stay ‘on edge’ for no reason and steer clear of activities that make them anxious. People showing such symptoms are considered to be suffering from Generalized Anxiety Disorder or GAD.

Many people report having experienced anxiety right from childhood. Studies show that GAD comes on gradually and can begin at any point of one’s life cycle. While the exact cause of GAD is unknown, evidence shows that a person’s biological factors, life experiences, family, and social background all contribute to generalized anxiety.

People suffering from GAD may find it difficult to even just get through a day productively. They are unable to stop the worry cycle, even when they know that the situation is not as bad as they deem. Constant anxiety can also manifest as physical symptoms such as stomach aches or headaches.

Generalized anxiety is often left untreated as people fail to identify it as a disorder. So, in this blog, we will learn more about identifying GAD and providing effective treatments to help the patients live a better life.

Effective treatments for GAD

For people with mild to moderate anxiety levels, GAD treatments allow them to lead full and meaningful lives. Clinical psychology sessions are found to be one of the most effective methods to help patients cope with GAD. While there are some medications like selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that give faster results, psychotherapy assures stable, long-term results without medicines.

Clinical psychologists highly recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which is the gold standard of psychotherapy for treating GAD. CBT is a short-term structured treatment that explores and establishes a better relationship between the patient’s conscious thoughts, feelings, behaviors that normally trigger anxiety. CBT is effective in both adults and children.

Problem-focused talk therapies are also recommended by clinical psychologists to help reduce worrying and control anxious thoughts or sensations. Other talk therapies like psychodynamic psychotherapy are also employed for treated GAD. This insight-oriented therapy focuses on resolving internal conflicts that arise from thoughts and emotions outside the patient’s consciousness. Talk therapies are found to be very effective in adults but are normally not recommended for children.

Clinical psychology utilizes evidence-based GAD treatment plans that are customized for each patient; which is why it is considered to be one of the best treatment options to cope with GAD.

For years, mental health was a topic that was always kept under wraps. People either ignored or refused to believe that mental wellbeing needs to be discussed. Even when many men and women spend their entire lives suffering,  the very few who sought therapy were frowned upon.

However, things have gotten much better over the last three decades. With increased awareness, the first World Mental Health Day was observed on October 10th in 1992. Slowly but steadily, people started accepting the fact that mental wellbeing is just as important as physical health. Still, there were major gaps in recognizing mental and emotional distresses in people, which in most cases, start right from childhood.

Childhood experiences and mental health

A recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics noted that positive childhood experiences lead to better adult mental health. A survey was conducted among 6,118 adults on some of their most important childhood experiences and the results were consolidated. The adults who reported 6 to 7 positive childhood experiences included in the survey were found to be 72% less likely to suffer from depression or at least 14 poor mental health days every month. The study concluded that adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) like abuse, neglect, violence, and parental absence leave long-lasting negative effects on a child’s mental health, while positive nurturance helps reduce children’s stress hormones, helping them relax and to become open, curious and maintain positive relationships with others.

In short, better mental health is guaranteed with positive childhood experiences. This is why we need to give the right care, attention, and support to our children in all aspects of their life

The Need For Children’s Mental Health Week

The Children’s Mental Health Week was launched in 2015 by Place2Be (P2B), a UK based organization that provides in-school emotional support to children and young people. The primary aim of this week is to raise awareness of children’s mental health, the support available, and encourage conversations about mental health. This year’s Children’s Mental Health Week is taking place from 1st to 7th February 2021, with the theme “Express Yourself”.

‘Express yourself’ focuses on helping children find ways to share their thoughts, feelings, or ideas through creativity. Children are encouraged to pursue activities like art, music, poetry and writing, dance and writing, photography and film, and other activities that make them feel good.

It should be noted that ‘Express yourself’ is not about competing with peers or putting on a performance for others. It is all about finding ways to show who you are and how you see the world. The core idea is to help children learn ways to be happy and feel good about themselves.

During the Children’s Mental Health Week 2021, children, as well as their parents or caregivers, are encouraged to explore various ways to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas through creative activities. By creating a safe space for your child to follow their passion and realize their potential to be creative and find happiness, you will contribute to positive experiences in their lives.

Every child has the potential to make it big in this world. They are all born with innate talents and a thirst to learn and explore. By helping them live a happy childhood, you are essentially building a happier, healthier, and amazing generation.

With each passing year, detox diets are gaining more popularity.

Ever wondered why?

We live in a world that is progressively becoming polluted and unhealthy. We are exposed to toxic chemicals and particles every day that we are not even aware of. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat have all become contaminated and it is time we redesigned our daily routine. From eating healthy home-cooked meals to exercising daily, simple changes to our lifestyle can help us stay healthy. When people consider their health and wellbeing a priority, detoxing becomes a habit.

Detox programs are not new to us. We all try to eliminate pollutants from our bodies in different ways. However, it is important to learn natural techniques to detox rather than relying on artificial means.

One way to detox your body naturally is by switching to a detox diet. Choosing locally grown organic produce to cook your meals is a start. There are many food items that you can prepare at home which help cleanse your digestive system and thereby your whole body. Fresh juices, smoothies, fiber-rich foods, etc are some food items that we need to include in our meals as part of our detox diet.

Although your home-cooked meals are sure to be healthy and nutritious, you may find limited options while eating out while on a detox diet. But not anymore.

At our wellness center in Dubai, we have our own detox kitchen. The 100 cafe is our take at a cozy restaurant that focuses on providing scrumptious meals that are nutritious and detoxing. Each of our dishes is thoughtfully created using fresh local produce as well as quality foods sourced directly from their country of origin.

If you are craving some delicious and nutrient-rich bites while away from home, here are some of our signature dishes that you will love to have-

A surprise twist on traditional oatmeal. This delicious breakfast dish consists of oats soaked in cashew milk overnight with natural blue spirulina, cinnamon, Madagascan vanilla pods, sweetened with maple syrup, and topped with fresh strawberries, blueberries, and goji berries.

An all-time favorite detox meal from our kitchen. An antioxidant, our Acai is blended with banana and a splash of apple juice, topped with blueberries, goji berries, cacao nibs, coconut flakes, and peanut butter. The dish is vegan and gluten-free.

  • Vegan cheese sandwiches

Enjoy a yummy and nutritious bite of our vegan cheese sandwiches. Our sourdough sandwich is filled with homemade vegan cheese of cashew nuts, nutritional yeast, and probiotics. The sandwiches come with two delicious vegan stuffing to tingle your taste buds- alfalfa sprouts and rich tomatoes or zaatar, Palestinian olives, and mint leaves.

  • Red Cabbage Salad

If you are a salad lover, red cabbage salad is a must-try. Inspired by the culinary delights of Japan, the salad combines grated raw red cabbage and carrots with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and gomashio (toasted sesame salt), with a vegan mayonnaise dressing. The dish is gluten-free.

And many more!

We also offer specialty coffees, medicinal teas, apple cider tonics, tea infusions, and various desserts that are sure to leave you craving for more! Pilates is one of the most popular exercises in the world as it targets various muscle groups in the body. It is widely known to help practitioners gain strength, flexibility, and agility. For a long time, people considered pilates as an exercise only for maintaining their fitness. However, this unique workout is now rapidly rising as a rehabilitative technique to treat injuries.

Rehabilitation physiotherapies have undergone many changes over the years. Extensive studies on the subject have found that Pilates is an effective tool for injury recovery and rehabilitation. Physiotherapists across the world are now working together with pilates trainers to help their patients heal better through routine workouts. Today pilates classes are available exclusively for injury rehabilitation

To understand how pilates helps people recovering from injuries, we need to know how they happen in the first place. Let us take a look-

How do injuries happen?

A person can get injured in two ways. Sometimes a single blunt force or a traumatic occurrence like a collision or fall can cause acute injuries like dislocations, fractures, or sprains.

On the other hand, some people find themselves suffering from overuse injuries that are caused as a result of poor form, repetitive movements, muscular imbalances, or misalignments. Muscular imbalances are one of the biggest culprits of lingering pain. The way you walk, sit or lie every day down puts pressure on some muscles and weakens some others. Also, increased load on your joints make them highly susceptible to ligament tears, pulls, and strains. Common areas that get injured are the neck, back, shoulder, pelvic area, knees, wrists, and ankles.

In short, injuries can occur to anyone at any time, whether it’s acute or lingering. But recovering from them may seem impossible without prolonged treatment. This is where pilates can help you by hastening your recovery journey.

Pilates for injury recovery and rehabilitation

Pilates exercises focus on the right form and stretch the core muscles of your body, promoting even musculature throughout. The core or “center” of your body includes deep abdominal muscles that lie closer to your spine. Practicing pilates daily can help correct the spinal-pelvic alignment which is vital for improving your form, avoiding and recovering from injuries.

The principles of pilates are very simple and straightforward. Each movement in pilates emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and even musculature. Unlike conventional physical therapy, where movements may be rigid and too painful for the patient, pilates can be modified to suit each individual and act as a combination of exercise and therapy required for muscular healing. Depending upon the seriousness of the injury, pilates trainers recommend basic movements to very advanced ones that help with recovery and management of injuries.

With pilates, patients are encouraged to understand their body’s limits and push them further to facilitate recovery. The way the exercises are conceived makes it a positive experience, paving the way to physical and mental wellbeing.

Therapies have become very popular and mainstream in the past decade, with increased awareness among people about mental and emotional distress. Today, more and more people are signing up for them, especially after the events of 2020.

Of the many types of therapies, people are more drawn to RTT or Rapid Transformational Therapy due to several reasons. This hybrid therapy devised by renowned therapist Marisa Peer offers unparalleled results in a single 90-minute session. A combination of the principles from Hypnotherapy, NLP, Psychotherapy & Cognitive Behavioral Therapies, RTT is the ideal solution to tackle various physical, mental, and emotional distresses in this fast-paced world.

Am I a good candidate for RTT?

If you are wondering whether RTT is for you, we assure you that it is. RTT can help you attain permanent relief from any physical, emotional, or psychological pain that you are in by reframing your core beliefs, values, habits, and emotions. By changing the way you respond to your environment, RTT helps you take better actions. If you are unable to organize your thoughts, facing blocks, and unable to reach your goals, RTT is for you.

The techniques involved in RTT are found to rapidly rewire your brain’s neural pathways, replacing negative beliefs/behavior patterns and allowing positive and life-affirming beliefs to form. This takes you on your healing journey, helping you grow and gain control over your life.

RTT session: The three stages of healing

RTT sessions are unique for each individual. The therapist takes the patient through a guided journey that lasts from 90 minutes to 2 hours. The sessions are very powerful, allowing the patient to break through and let go of pain, emotions, and behaviors that are holding them back.

The session is divided into 3 stages of healing. Here is what it looks like-

  • Clarity Coaching

Here, the hypnotherapist creates a safe space for the patient to discuss and understand the intended outcome of the session. The patient can talk about a specific problem like anxiety, trauma, or weight issues and why they want to get over it.

  • RTT

The second stage of healing starts when the patient enters a deeply relaxed state. The therapist guides the patient to this stage through light hypnosis. As the session progresses, the patient starts a dialogue with their subconscious mind to uncover the issues that are holding them back. From there, the individual enters a path of peaceful acceptance of situations by eliminating fears and negative emotions.

  • Audio Recording

At the final stage of therapy, the patient receives an audio recording to listen to daily. It encourages them to stay on the path of transformational changes and emotional healing. This personalized recording will be around 15 to 20 minutes and will guide their mind to achieve their goals. The recommended listening duration is 30 to 40 days after which a follow-up session is suggested to consolidate the issue and results.

RTT experience is different for everyone. As the sessions unlock areas of the subconscious, people may feel relaxed, sleepy, or a floating sensation. However, what you feel doesn’t indicate the effectiveness of the therapy. Your healing process will continue over the next few weeks after the session, allowing you to see everything in your life from a positive perspective and stay energized to reach your goals.

Your next step

If you require therapy and are in search of a reliable therapist, we offer RTT at our wellness center in Jumeirah. Reach out to us and book a session with our hypnotherapist and certified RTT coach Helen Pleic today.

John Lyly, the renowned English writer once said “Marriages are made in heaven and consummated on earth”; and every couple in love would agree to this during the first few months of marital bliss. However, marriages are not just about being in love and spending a wonderful time together. It is a lifelong commitment that has to be built on love, respect, trust, faithfulness, patience, selflessness and communication. A happy marriage takes time and a lot of effort to work, even if you are in love with your partner.

Life is not an easy journey. It has its ups and downs. Similarly, every marriage, however strong it is, will have its fair share of struggles and disappointments. We understand that going through a rough patch with your partner is not easy. You may feel sad, angry, hopeless and betrayed at times. Often such negative feelings will lead to resentment and indifference if not dealt with, culminating in a divorce.

What many couples struggling in their relationship fail to understand is that every problem has a solution. If you are unable to find it yourself, feel no shame in seeking help. This is where relationship coaches come in.

While every marriage is different, there are a few common techniques relationship coaches recommend. Let us find out what they are.

Understanding individual and shared goals

Sometimes, couples realize that they have different expectations from their marriage and life in general. This leads to arguments, growing contempt and separation. So, even when they sign up for relationship coaching, their individual goals may be different.

Sure, the couple may be looking for ways to stay together. However, the important thing to do here is to understand what didn’t work. Are their marriage goals drastically different? Do they have any common interests? What about their personal life goals?

Relationship coaches advice couples to openly share their hopes and dreams for life and what they expect from staying married. More often than not, such discussions help the husband and wife to realise that with some effort from both sides, their relationship can work. Getting on the same page with your partner is the first step to saving your marriage.

Commit to repairing the damage

For a marriage to be a happy one, never go to bed angry. When couples argue and fight, it can leave physical and emotional scars on one or both of them. These fights, even if it’s one-off, can lead to resentment and distance.

For a marriage to work after an ugly fight, both partners must commit to repairing the damages. Be ready to forgive and move past the issues. If you are unable to hold a peaceful conversation, your relationship coach can provide a middle ground and an unbiased perspective to help you talk freely.

Build trust

Unwarranted doubts and criticism are like rust on a marriage. It slowly corrodes the relationship away leaving two hostile and frustrated individuals.

Instead of responding negatively to your partner’s actions, learn to trust them. Trust is a two-way bridge. If your partner is willing to believe in you, respond to them by being trustworthy and faithful.

Show simple acts of love

Relationship coaches often come across people who complain that their spouse does not love them anymore, which has led to arguments and indifference.

Love should be cherished, not hidden away in the corner of your heart. Even if you love and respect your partner, failing to show them how much they mean to you can be damaging to the relationship. Human beings need to feel wanted and loved. Showing your love and care to your partner need not be a huge romantic gesture, especially if your spouse is not keen about such things.

Try helping each other around the house every day. Find ways to enjoy each other’s company. Have at least one meal together every day. Listen to your partner patiently and support them during tough times. Even a small smile, a kind touch or a whispered ‘I love you’ and make your partner feel loved every day.

When to seek help?

If you and your partner are unsure how to go forward in your marriage, or thinking of separating over lingering issues, relationship coaching is for you. By providing a safe space for you and your partner to have open conversations and undergo therapy, our certified relationship coach and NLP practitioner Roh Hafez can help you mend, heal and save your marriage. How popular are superfoods? With the number of healthy cafes and the rise of several diet fads, we can safely say that Superfoods like Goji berries, Kale, Acai berries, Barley, and many others have become so popular. Yet among these famous superfoods, the small but nutrient-rich chia seeds stand out.

What exactly are in Chia seeds that make them so popular among health enthusiasts? Today, let us discuss the seeds’ amazing health benefits that prove big surprises come in small packages.

It Is High In Fiber, Protein And Omega 3

Chia seeds contain a high amount of fiber. In fact, 40% of its weight is fiber, which aids digestion. Some of the insoluble fiber found in chia seeds can stay in the stomach and facilitate the formation of SCFAs of short-chain fatty acids that promote a healthy colon.  Apart from this, the superfood is packed with 19% protein, which is more than what most grains can provide. This is why chia seeds are often added to protein shakes.

It also contains all nine essential amino acids that allow our bodies to repair, grow, and develop healthy organs. Finally, Omega 3 found in chia seeds are even better than that found in Flax seeds. Up to 75%  of the healthy fats in chia seeds are Omega 3, and the remaining 20% are Omega-6 fatty acids. A high intake of these fatty acids reduces inflammation in the body.

It Is Rich In Multiple Minerals

This humble superfood may lack in vitamins but is still nutrient-dense and contains several minerals, including:

  • Calcium
  • Phosphorous
  • Manganese
  • Copper
  • Selenium
  • Iron
  • Magnesium

These minerals are essential for everyday health. However, the phytic acids found in chia seeds may reduce the body’s iron and zinc absorption. For this reason, a balanced diet is needed to gain the nutrients necessary for the body to be healthy.

Chia Seeds Can Be Prepared In Many Ways

Chia seeds are so versatile you can have them as a pudding or thrown into your desserts, or mixed with your juices and protein shakes. One of the simplest ways to eat chia is by soaking them in water and adding honey. But there are also several other fun ways of enjoying them such as:

  • Tossing them into salads.
  • Adding chia seeds into your stirfry.
  • Baked in bread.
  • Mixed with other grains and seeds.
  • Addition to jams and spreads.
  • A healthy substitute to egg.
  • Used as a thickener for burgers and meatballs.

These are only a few examples of what you can do with chia seeds. Try adding them into your diet so you can benefit from their nutrients.

In today’s blog, let’s take a look at our menu at The 100 Café, our cafe in Jumeirah, and dive into the details and the numerous health benefits of our Medicinal teas.

What Is In Herbal Teas?

In general, the health benefits of medicinal teas depend on their composition- that is, the combination of herbs, flowers, and other ingredients that make up the tea.  Herbal teas can also just contain a single ingredient, as with most cases.  Although there is a multitude of medicinal teas available,  they all have somewhat similar benefits.

All teas contain polyphenols, which are chemical compounds in plants that greatly benefit the body. They also contain antioxidants that protect our cells from damage and free radicals. And like coffee, teas have caffeine in them, providing the boost of energy needed to get through a busy day.

Our Medicinal Teas At The 100 Café

Sage

Our Sage tea is made from the common sage leaves or Salvia officinalis. This leaf belongs to the mint family and is often used as an aromatic herb in culinary dishes. Sage leaves are rich in ellagic acid and rosmarinic acid, which are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds. Ellagic acid, in particular, is known to fight off cancer and other diseases.  Sage tea can also help with weight loss and in keeping the hair healthy and strong.

Zaatar

Zaatar tea is widely known to improve the immune system. This popular Middle Eastern herb has the ability to strengthen the bones,  enhance skin health, reduce inflammation, promote better circulation, and is popular in aiding brain health. In addition, Zaatar is commonly used in the prevention of chronic diseases.

Astragalus And Vanilla

Popular in Chinese traditional medicine, Astragalus root is known for its several active compounds that many traditional health practitioners believe to be responsible for its health benefits. Although there is only limited research on the Astragalus root, it has been proven effective in treating heart conditions,  chronic fatigue, the common cold, kidney diseases, and seasonal allergies.

Goji And Ginger

The Chinese, Mongolians, and Tibetan are known to brew their tea and infuse it with goji berries. This superfood has several health benefits, including protection against cancer, prevention of liver damage, and boosts the immune system. With ginger’s weight loss and anti-inflammatory benefits, this tea has become a best-seller at the cafe.

Ginseng And Honey

Lastly, our Ginseng and Honey tea is popular with those who want to benefit from Ginseng while enjoying a cup of refreshing tea with honey. Several individuals have used the Ginseng root to improve their overall health. It is also a popular ingredient in male supplements as well as in fighting diabetes, hypertension, and stress.

In this special post, let us talk about what IGR farms are and what is there to look out for at The 100 Café.

What Are IGR Farms?

Integrated Green Resource farms, located in Al Khawaneej, Al Ain, and Al Rabha, are agricultural lands focused on open-field farming and greenhouse practices.  All farmlands are certified organic, and they guarantee excellent quality produce. IGR farms are also certified by the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology or ESMA, strictly following UAE and EU standards.

Further, these farms are also certified by the Global Good Agricultural Practice or G.A.P. All of these certifications and standards ensure the peace of mind of their customers and partners in the UAE’s thriving green consumerism. We, at The Hundred, are proud to use such green products in our menu at The 100 Café.

The Farm To Table Concept

Nothing speaks of authenticity and humility that the term “Farm To Table.” At its truest form, farm to table menus literally speaks of preparing food right from the farm itself-meaning, dishes are created from the farm straight to its own kitchens.  From a restaurant or a cafe’s point of view,  farm to table generally means sourcing produce directly from local farms without intermediaries. This practice cultivates a good relationship between local farmers and local businesses in the UAE.

In Creating A Better Menu

There is a lot to be excited about when it comes to dealing with fresh and organic produce.  Our team at The Hundred Café has never been more inspired and humbled at the same time. We cannot stress enough how we would like to offer our customers these produce the best way possible. Living in an environment that we have today, we are constantly surrounded by pollution. From the air we breathe, the water we drink, right down to the food we consume, everything that we put into our bodies can be contaminated with harmful chemicals. This makes us vulnerable to toxins and free-radicals that can damage our health.  While the human body can detoxify its own, it is still essential to establish a regular detox program to help our bodies purge toxins.

Why Is It Important To Detoxify?

When we detoxify our bodies, we can strengthen our immune systems. This makes us resistant to infection and diseases. Regularly cleansing our bodies will also make our organs work efficiently- which contributes to healthy bodily functions. Other benefits of detoxification are:

  • Added energy
  • Clear Skin and better complexion
  • Alleviate Chronic Pain
  • Weight Loss
  • Better digestive health
  • Improved Mood

A good detox routine will not only keep us healthy, but it will also improve our performance at work and in doing our daily activities.  Putting yourself on the right track starts with choosing a suitable way to detoxify.  There are several means of boosting our body’s detoxifying capabilities,  and one way of doing this is spending time at a sauna.

Sweating It Out

Among the organs that work to detoxify the body, the skin is the largest. Each pore on our skin is designed to help flush out the small amounts of heavy metals and BPA or Bisphenol A from plastics. These toxins are easily dissolved in water and make their way into the body’s sweat. According to the book, Sauna Therapy for Detoxification and Healing by Dr. Lawrence Wilson,  the heat produced by a sauna mimics the same function as that of the heat from a fever.

Raising the body’s core temperature by a few degrees higher can help facilitate our body’s response to invasive pathogens such as viruses and bacteria. Further, toxic chemicals, including phthalates, mostly found in almost all products such as shower curtains, children’s toys, cosmetics, and many others, are readily excreted through perspiration.

The Infrared Sauna

A traditional sauna generates heat like how a home is heated through furnaces or how we keep warm on a cold night at camping.  A heater is placed inside the sauna, which gradually increases the temperature in the room. Simply put, a traditional sauna heats the body from the outside.  In contrast, the infrared sauna heats the body from deep inside the tissues using panels that create infrared rays that penetrate the skin.

Infrared saunas use radiant heat that leads the individual to perspire  80% water and 20% chemicals/ toxins. It also operates at a lower temperature than that of the traditional one. It’s a more efficient way of raising the body’s core temperature without leaving the individual feeling claustrophobic and suffocated due to thick steam.

Things To Remember

Before jumping into the sauna, you have to keep in mind a few points to help you get the most out of your session. It is essential to keep yourself hydrated right before you enter the sauna.  Be mindful of setting a time limit depending on your tolerance and your therapist’s suggestion; never go beyond your limits. Remember to make time for your body to cool down by taking a shower or drinking a glass of cold water. Showering after your sauna session is vital as you would want to wash away the toxins from your sweat. This will also prevent reabsorption into the skin.
