selective eating

Something you don’t hear many parents talk about is an eating disorder referred to as ‘selective eating’. And while it is not fatal nor necessarily accompanied by other psychological difficulties, it does cause a lot of parental anguish and by extension, childhood distress.

So, what is selective eating?  ‘SE’ is a condition in which a child eats only a very narrow range of foods and refuses all others and yet where the child’s growth is normal.  Such children do not respond to persuasion, bribes, punishments, gold stars (reward systems) and that age old tactic of being left at the table “until they finish their food” doesn’t help in the slightest.  Parents of selective eaters report regularly having tried all these things and more to no avail. These children would literally prefer to starve than eat food outside their range.

And what a range it is! Cheetos, chocolate syrup in a particular kind of milk, smooth (hydrogenated) peanut butter, chicken nuggets from McDonald’s only, white breads, mostly starches and sugars and fats.  And to add insult to injury, rarely will this child eat just any old white bread or any old peanut butter—no, it has to be from a certain place and cannot be altered in any way.  Can you imagine how frustrating this is for the parents?  They see their paediatrician, they are told the child is normal and will grow out of it.

Well…. normal, yes.  Grow out of it, unlikely, and they usually enter adulthood able to eat only a very narrow range, becoming that husband/wife who only eats ‘white things, plain and unembellished’—no green vegetables, only corn, no fruit, etc. They are otherwise fine children, perhaps they do have a fear of change and new things in general, but they are definitely not mentally ill.

But the parents’ distress is real. Mothers in particular come under fire from well-meaning advice givers: “take away his iPad until he eats something good for him” or “just make her sit there, she’ll eat when she gets hungry enough”.  Oh no they won’t.  And this is not a failure of parenting nor a failure of caring…

Luckily our friend Beryl Comar, Emotional Intelligence Development Specialist, former headteacher and university lecturer uses a range of techniques including NLP, EFT, Timelines and Parts Therapy and is no stranger to this disorder!

Here is a story as narrated by Beryl of a former patient:

When she arrived Amal was doubtful, her mother was cynical (even I was wondering what we could do in such a seemingly desperate case – what if nothing happened?!).

14year old Amal was diagnosed with SEDs (Selective eating Disorder) and she ate only tomato soup, a specific type shell pasta, tomato sauce, French fries and one brand of chips (crisps in UK). She was hospitalized for 2 years with a feeding tube. Amal and her desperate mother needed help and fast!

We went through the ‘Freaky Eaters Process’ of removing imprints and memories of food in Amal’s timeline, and we talked to the different parts of herself that make decisions as a result of previously held beliefs. She wanted to keep her eyes open, although on occasion, she closed her eyes through this process.

And then it came to the food testing…Fruit salad, cheese, cottage pie, beef and dumplings, broccoli and sweet potato, all foods that Amal and her mother had chosen previously that she would want to eat if she actually could. She proceeded to taste each one calmly. Then, she actually had to be asked to stop eating the fruit salad so as to have a go at other things. Which she did one by one. Finally, she took the fruit salad again, and ate it on the way out.

Over the past years Amal has had: daily group therapy, regular 1-1 therapy, family therapy and a food supporter during mealtimes. Now she is taking life one small baby step at a time, making very small changes every few days. And her parents are delighted to have their teenager back.

Beryl Comar is here to help you and your children with difficult issues such as those above (although obviously not always as extreme or instantaneous to resolve), and she will be at The Hundred from April 2nd to May 8th and look forward to helping with you with any fears, phobias (such as social anxiety and public speaking), unwanted habits (nail-biting, eating issues, bedwetting) and also can help eliminate smoking, obsessive behaviours and limiting beliefs.

All you have to do is take the first step and make an appointment via email or on 04 3447333 and spend 90 minutes with me to begin making the change – or even leave already having made the change you wish to make.

diabetes

Did you know that in the UAE there is a disease that affects ONE in every FIVE people living in the UAE? Its growth can certainly be described as a “Tsunami of Diabetes”! And studies show the rates rising steadily with approximately 450,000 undiagnosed cases, and a 2017 survey points out that 15% of expats and one-fifth of Emiratis in Dubai are diabetic! What makes this even worse is that according to the statistics many who develop diabetes are children as young as 13 years old!

So, what can be done to combat this disease? We had a chat with our in-house Naturopath Dr Faryal Luhar and here are her thoughts:

With Diabetes the conventional approaches typically focus on medications to lower blood sugar levels and improve insulin function, however it is important to identify and treat the underlying contributing factors. Diabetes is primarily caused by lifestyle and environmental factors, which if addressed properly, can actually prevent and possibly reverse the course of disease!

Poor-quality diet and nutritional deficiencies, lack of exercise or too much sitting, poor sleep, and of course stress are some of the main culprits. Environmental toxins and genetic susceptibilities also play a big role, but as Dr. Mark Hyman says, “while genes may load the gun, environment and lifestyle pull the trigger”!

So by realizing that Food is Medicine and is the most powerful tool against disease will lay the foundation for great health. An emphasis on real, nutrient-dense foods such as meat, fish, organic vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, and some starchy foods like sweet potatoes will provide the body with the necessary nutrients to combat high blood sugar and balance metabolic problems. Processed foods create havoc with blood sugar balance and provide little to no nutritional value.

Examining one’s lifestyle to address areas that need attention such as exercise or sleep or digestion are equally important. Diabetes CAN be prevented and reversed with effective nutritional and lifestyle strategies. Even those with advanced disease can make improvements with natural medicines and therapies designed to restore the way cells and the body functions!

So, if you or a loved one suffers from this disease or if you would like to know how you can help educate your family to protect them email or call us on +9714 344 7333 to book a session with Dr Faryal Luhar today!

infrared sauna

What if we told you that we have a tool that can warm up, relax AND detox your body all at once?? Well, we do! Let us introduce the Infrared Sauna.

Ok, but what’s the difference between using a regular sauna and infrared sauna? The biggest difference is that infrared heating penetrates much deeper into fat tissue and your neuromuscular system. Also, in an infrared sauna, sweating occurs at a lower temperature which in turn puts less demand on the cardiovascular system. The benefits of these saunas are thought to be a result of the heat actually reaching the neuromuscular system providing quicker recovery.

Another difference is that infrared saunas use heat and light to create the warmth that penetrates your body to help you to detox, very similar to the infrared rays of the sun, which as well all know are the healthiest rays out there!

What are some of the potential benefits?

  • Detoxification: All that sweating you’ll be doing? It helps move the toxins out of your body through your sweat.
  • Pain relief: The heat can actually reach and penetrate your muscles and can provide relief from chronic pain.
  • Stress reduction: It’s easy for your stress to reduce when you’re in a disconnected and relaxed state. The gentle heat relaxes you and can also improve your sleep.
  • Skin purification: You will love that immediately after detoxing in an infrared sauna you will notice that your skin is glowing because the impurities have been pushed out.

So, in a nutshell, this therapy can give you some great benefits without the risks of traditional saunas.

pelvic health healing sessions with Karin Locher

Most women, when faced with a diagnosis affecting their pelvic floor, are unaware that there are non-invasive treatment options that exist outside of medication and surgery. Pelvic health issues do not need to be accepted as a part of our being; when given the chance, the body’s self-correcting and self- organizing nature can heal itself with some help.

This month we invite you to join the founder and director of the Centre for Spatial MedicineKarin Locher as she brings her expertise and experience to The Hundred Wellness Centre. Karin will be conducting hour long private sessions in which she will work to resolve and restore pelvic conditions to help achieve physical freedom.

Karin utilizes a personalized treatment approach that weaves together each patient’s unique health journey with her own experience and knowledge of the human body, using a combination of hands-on techniques, visceral manipulation and targeted exercises.

Each of these unique sessions has 2 stages:

The First Stage of Healing – To help discover and recognize the coping strategies and habit patterns that are playing out in the body. This stage involves s a manual fascia releasing process, where tensions and past experiences that are held in the fascial tissues are released.  Once released, the nervous system is able to resume a state of optimal health and function.

The Second Stage of Healing – To help increase awareness of the unconscious patterns that are disturbing the balance of the body which are contributing and creating the strains and stagnation, which in turn lead to pain and dis-ease.

Please note that treatment will vary depending on the specific problems identified.

Dates available in March

Wednesday: 14th 9am – 1pm

Wednesday: 21st 9am – 1pm

Session length: 1hr

Cost per session:  700dhs

 adaptogens

You may have heard, there are some new kids on the block and their names are ‘adaptogens’— Only they aren’t new to us at The Hundred Wellness Centre! If you are a regular client you know that our best-selling supplement ‘Immune 360‘ has somewhat of a cult following, and we can’t keep it on our shelves! But did you know that part of the magic of this supplement lies in the ingredient list which includes.. Can you guess it? Adaptogens!

Now, we can’t tell you how excited we are about this post! We get countless questions about adaptogens and now we will finally shed some light on this topic for you. So let’s dive right in!

What exactly are Adaptogens?

Adaptogens are a special group of natural herbs that help your body ‘adapt’ to the specific needs that your body has, such as coping with stress or fatigue. They are natural remedies for your adrenal system. They enable the body’s cells to access more energy by helping them eliminate toxic by-products and utilize oxygen more efficiently. And these Adaptogens have been ‘Tried and Tested’ in Traditional Chinese and Indian cultures as medicinal herbs for thousands of years!

One of the most potent adaptogens in Immune 360 formula is Ashwagandha, which is probably the most known adaptogen today- Ashwagandha is great for soothing your nervous system and boosting immunity and is a rich source of iron.

Another powerful ingredient in Immune 360 is Astragalus —a Chinese herb used for thousands of years to strengthen the body. Astragalus supports immune cells, which play a major role in protecting us from viruses.

And finally adding the finishing touches on this blend we find the Maitake mushroom, also known as the Magnificent Dancing Mushroom. This highly regarded Japanese mushroom has been shown to activate the immune system and contains beta-glucans (Beta-glucans work by activating the immune cells known as Macrophages. These Macrophages trap and consume foreign substances that do not belong in the body.!)

Of course these adaptogens are in the formula in addition to lots of other good stuff! So, what do you think? Do you already use any adaptogens, and have you noticed a difference in how you feel? Are you thinking of adding some to your diet but still have questions? Drop us an email or call us to book a session with Dr. Sean Penny to explore further.

Oh, and if you’d like to try Immune 360 for yourself drop by to pick up a bottle!

plants

There’s something about plants that just liven up a room, right? They add color, texture and warmth to the home, and they can even improve air quality. Most indoor plants are pretty easy to grow, but they must be given appropriate care in order to thrive, but as lovely as they can be, they are one of the more intimidating parts of home décor. After all, when was the last time your coffee table began to yellow, or your floral wallpaper refused to blossom?

That said, they are 100% worth all the trouble! Not only is some greenery good for ambiance, but studies actually show that adding even one indoor plant in your living or work space can:

So, what do you say? Ready to go green with The Hundred Wellness Centre? Here are some tips below, but remember: To be a good gardener, you need patience and grace because you will make a few mistakes along the way – and that usually means killing a few plants til you get a hang of it all!

How much light?
All plants need light. But not the same light. It’s one of the most defining factors for plants, so it’s important to know what type of light your house receives before selecting your varieties. Not sure what all this means? Ask! The people that work with plants are a wealth of knowledge and love helping us choose which plants work best for our homes.

Water accordingly:
One of the most common mistakes you can make is over-watering or under-watering a plant. (We are guilty of this one!) Do your research and understand what your particular plant needs. If you’re an inconsistent waterer, get plants that tolerate a little neglect.

Clean the leaves:
Some indoor plants have large leaves and because of their large surface, they tend to collect a lot of dust. To keep the plant healthy (dust can block light absorption), wipe dust off with a soft cloth.

Tell us— do you have a green thumb? Can you share with us any tips that have worked for you?

Get your running shoes out and ready for some action, because in a few days it’s that time of year again… Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon time! Now maybe this year you’re running to raise awareness for a cause that’s close to your heart, or maybe it’s something that’s been on your bucket list and is a personal challenge. Whatever your motivation is for running a marathon is, one thing is for sure— the experience is ambitious, and life-changing.

Training for a marathon is an intense process that takes place over the course of months or even years. From building your base mileage, to working on your time and speed, you will constantly be challenging and pushing your body to its limits. So, it’s no surprise that many runners implement yoga into their training for a marathon. Sure, we all know that yoga is a stress buster. But it also packs some serious perks for runners, like improving flexibility, easing aches and pains, and helping you recover from long runs and races faster.  And the body isn’t the only thing to benefit from yoga. During a yoga practice the mind is also strengthened with a sense of determination that will definitely be crucial on race day.

We asked our in-house super strong+ stretchy Yogi Walid for some of his favorite poses for runners. These can be practiced pretty much anywhere, but try focusing on these postures next time you’re in a yoga class, and feel free to ask Walid for pointers on how to perfect them. Good luck on your race!

Upward-Facing Dog Pose

marathon

This pose will challenge you to lift and open your chest by expanding the rib cage, while strengthening your arms, shoulders and wrists, as well as increasing flexibility in the back and neck. This is an important pose in yoga for its ability to align the spine and stimulate the nervous system, and can be done before and after the run.

Steps:

01. Begin lying on your belly with your legs extended straight back behind you and the tops of your feet relaxed down on the mat, hip distance apart.

02. Plant your palms beside your ribs so that your elbows are bent approximately 90 degrees and your forearms are relatively perpendicular to the floor.

03. Look up and on an inhale, press firmly into your palms and straighten your arms, lifting your torso, hips, and the tops of your thighs up off the ground. Your shoulders should be stacked directly over your wrists.

04. Relax your shoulders away from your ears, then begin to roll your shoulders back and find the action of pulling your chest forward through your upper arms.

05. Keep your belly in toward your spine. Remain in the position for 5-10 deep breaths, then exhale slowly and come back to starting position.

Bridge pose

marathon

This pose can be performed before or after a run, and is effective in relaxing the body and reducing stress. It stretches the chest, spinal cord and neck, and works exclusively on your spine and hip joints. It also helps relieve pain, stiffness and discomfort in these regions and helps resolve any disorders associated with the neck, arms and palms.

Steps:

01. Lie flat on your yoga mat, with your feet flat on the floor, and your arms by your side, and knees parallel to your hips.

02. Now exhale and push up, and off the floor with your feet.

03. Raise your body up leaving your neck and head flat on the mat, and the rest of your body is in the air. You can use your hands to push down for added support.

04. Stay here for a few deep breaths, then bring your spine back to the floor by articulating it one vertebrae at the time.

Legs-Up the Wall Pose

marathon

This a restorative yoga pose that allows the mind and the body to relax, relieving stress and tension while stretching the hamstrings and back after a run.

Steps:

01. Find an open space near a wall.

02. Lie on your back, making sure that your hips are grounded on the floor as the back of your legs press against the wall, and the soles of your feet face upwards. It will take you a little bit of movement to get comfortable in this position. (you can also bend your legs a bit if you have tight hamstring muscles).

03. Now take a few minutes to breathe and enjoy this relaxing stretch!

We hope that these help and remember: A muscle is only as strong as it is flexible! So get stretching!!
